ARTECO's elite video management system (VMS), ARTECO-SERVER, has been tested and is INTRANSA SELECT certified for use on the Intransa EnterpriseServer and VideoAppliance. The ARTECO VMS system has been engineered to maximize resources with 100 percent channel customization for frames per second and provides resolution across three completely independent video streams for acquisition, display, and recording. Its video architecture allows organizations to customize video security resources based on what is important instead of compromising to a one-size-fits-all approach.

Intransa's video- optimized VideoApplianceEnterpriseServer andEnterpriseStorage platforms are designed to eliminate the challenges of untested commodity servers and storage designed for IT. Each is built for the 24x7x365 world of video surveillance and other demanding physical security project requirements and integrate with the company's portfolio of cloud-based support and management services.

The PEER Test for Video Management Software with Integrated Analytics

We are asked all of the time, what makes your software different from every other VMS platform people see on the market.   It must be truly overwhelming to have so many choices for integrators let alone end-users who venture to walk the show floors at major industry events.

Arteco takes a different approach in answering this question by asking to compare other VMS platforms to us to see if they pass our “PEER” test.  Here is how it goes:

P = Price per Channel has to be among the Lowest in Class for Industry
E = Easy to Use, Install, Support must be a central driver to the technology
E = Event-Management is Key, Purpose-driven, What is Important to security needs to be product focus.
R = Resource Management is the fundamental Issue in IP Video that products must address

Today we will cover the first Point in detail which is P = Price.  Future posts will cover the remaining components of the PEER System because A) It would be too long for anyone to read, and B) I am focused on selling for a living, not writing blogs!!

P:  Price is key to our product offering and we are 100% focused on offering the best price per channel in the VMS class with integrated Analytics (period).   Never differentiate on price you say? Not true, rather, differentiate on price only if it is a point of true differentiation.  Simply put: the value proposition for video analytics has been out of whack since the beginning.  Providers are still asking customers to pay double what a high-end VMS platform would cost without video analytics.  There should be a premium for the ability to do more with real-time situational awareness but to pay double is laughable.   No single issue has held back the progress and use of Video Analytics in the marketplace today than this pricing model.  The big VMS companies of the world use this practice to make the technology available so they can say that they do “everything” but in reality this practice slows down the adoption of video analytics.

Arteco is able to keep our prices commercially viable by focusing on the concept that “One Size Does Not Fit All” when it comes to video analytics.  Our studies show that 85% of all video analytics applications in the market fall under what we define as area analytics.  This is your Virtual Trip-wire, Loitering, and Violated Area applications.  This is to stop Trespassing.  It requires the least amount of time to set-up, very little tuning after the fact, and achieves very high accuracy (90-95%) in outdoor environments.  We recognize that this is the sweet spot for the Video Analytics market and we make it available on our PROFESSIONAL line at costs equal to or slightly higher than the major VMS providers WITHOUT ANALYTICS!     We reserve our Object Analytics (Speed, Counting , Abandoned/Removed) and Traffic Analytics (Vehicle Speed, Traffic Jam, Wrong-way) for our ENTERPRISE line at a premium price-point because these are niche applications.  Many analytics providers attempt to force advanced analytics applications on their customers in a one-size-fits-all approach.   Simply because they went through the trouble of developing them, they believe someone ought to pay.  Good luck with that approach ;-)

Analytics Use: What is the Purpose?

People always ask: “Where should I use analytics?”  Our answer: anywhere you hang a camera.  Listen, every camera that is ever installed should have a reason it was selected with that specific field of view.  We refer to this as the camera’s “purpose.”  The goal of analytics is to detect when the purpose happens while ignoring everything else.

Roughly 85-90% of analytics applications used today fall under what we refer to as “Area Analytics” which can be defined loosely as “Something, some place, longer than you want it to be there.”  This means there is not only a size and shape of the object but also a temporal value to that object’s occupation of the space.  This could be 0.1 seconds or it could by 3 minutes for example and defines the type of event that the user is interested in.   We could not care about people walking up and down a path all day long but when they stop in a specific area for a significant time interval, we want to know.  Using built-in filters to the software allow you to shape and define what will create an event and what will be ignored.

The key to understanding when, where or how to use analytics is rooted in understanding the purpose of the camera you have installed.   For the vast majority of real-world cameras, the purpose is to detect some form or trespassing.  This is a match made in heaven for a true video analytics-based solution.  Why do you ask?  Well I got into all sorts of trouble on another blog site (any guesses) a couple years ago when I stated that area analytics are the easiest to set-up, require the least amount of time for tuning, and give the most accurate detection of any analytics application on the market.  Now I was not referring strictly to Arteco, but to all true machine-vision based video analytics platforms on the market. My research came from speaking with various manufacturers as well as integrator technicians who have installed and set-up leading applications.  To anyone who has experience setting up applications, there is a tangible and significant difference between the time/complication to set up a violated area and speed threshold detection (for example).

The reason I say this is a perfect match for analytics now is because it is an application that is commercially viable in the industry.  It is a marriage of what is needed in the market (a way to streamline video resources for trespassing) and an application that gives high rates of accuracy with the least amount of set-up pain.    There are all sorts of examples of in recent years of applications and sales models that do not work well when it comes to video analytics.  By focusing on understanding the purpose of the camera and what the customer’s expectation of what they are trying to achieve with that specific field of view , we easily understand how to use video analytics applications to help increase the efficiency and effectives of the security profile.
